India Launches National Mental Health Helpline with AI-Powered Triage System

India Launches National Mental Health Helpline with AI-Powered Triage System

The Union Health Ministry on Monday launched the National Mental Health Helpline — a toll-free 24x7 service that combines trained counselors with an AI-powered triage system to provide immediate support to people in psychological distress. The helpline, reachable at 1800-599-MIND (6463), is available in 12 languages and aims to address India's severe shortage of mental health professionals.

How It Works

When a caller dials the helpline, an AI system first assesses the urgency of their situation through a series of standardized questions. High-risk callers (those expressing suicidal ideation or acute crisis) are immediately connected to senior clinical psychologists. Moderate-risk callers speak with trained counselors, while low-risk callers receive guided self-help resources and can schedule follow-up sessions.

The system has been developed in partnership with NIMHANS Bengaluru and IIT Bombay, with the AI model trained on over 200,000 anonymized counseling interactions. Early testing showed that the AI triage system correctly identified crisis-level calls with 94% accuracy, enabling faster response times for those most in need.

"India has only 0.3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people compared to the WHO recommended 3 per 100,000. Technology cannot replace therapists, but it can help us reach those who would otherwise suffer in silence," said the Union Health Minister at the launch event.

The helpline is supported by a network of 2,000 trained counselors working in shifts from 50 call centres across the country. The government has allocated Rs 750 crore for the first three years of operation. NGOs including iCall, Vandrevala Foundation, and AASRA have been integrated into the referral network for in-person follow-up support.
