India's UPI Crosses 20 Billion Monthly Transactions, Sets Global Record

India's UPI Crosses 20 Billion Monthly Transactions, Sets Global Record

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has crossed the 20 billion monthly transaction mark for the first time, processing Rs 24.5 lakh crore in value during February 2026. The milestone cements India's position as the world leader in real-time digital payments, with UPI now processing more transactions monthly than all credit card networks globally combined.

Growth Drivers

The surge has been driven by UPI's expansion into rural India, where digital payments grew 67% year-on-year. The introduction of UPI Lite, which allows offline transactions up to Rs 500, has been particularly transformative in areas with poor internet connectivity. Over 85 million users now actively use UPI Lite for small-value purchases.

Cross-border UPI transactions have also gained significant traction, with the service now operational in 12 countries including Singapore, UAE, France, and Sri Lanka. International UPI transactions grew 340% in the past year, though they still represent less than 1% of total volume.

"UPI has fundamentally transformed India's economy. From street vendors to corporate treasuries, digital payments have become the default mode of transaction. This is a model that the entire world is studying and replicating," said RBI Governor in his monthly monetary policy statement.

The NPCI is now working on UPI 3.0, which will introduce features like credit line integration, recurring payments automation, and enhanced merchant analytics. The upgrade is expected to launch in the second half of 2026, with the goal of reaching 30 billion monthly transactions by March 2027.
