ISRO Successfully Tests Reusable Launch Vehicle with Autonomous Landing

ISRO Successfully Tests Reusable Launch Vehicle with Autonomous Landing

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a major milestone on Saturday by successfully conducting an autonomous landing test of its Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD). The vehicle was lifted to an altitude of 70 kilometres by a solid rocket booster, separated, and then autonomously navigated back to a precise landing on a designated runway at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Technical Achievement

The RLV-TD executed a complex series of maneuvers during its descent, including hypersonic glide, controlled deceleration, and a final approach that brought it to within 2 meters of the target landing point. The vehicle's heat shield successfully withstood temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Celsius during re-entry, validating ISRO's thermal protection systems.

This was the fourth test in the RLV programme, but the first to demonstrate a fully autonomous landing from a near-orbital altitude. Previous tests had been conducted from lower altitudes with varying degrees of ground control assistance. The success brings India closer to developing a fully reusable space launch system that could reduce launch costs by up to 80%.

"This is India's SpaceX moment. A reusable launch vehicle will democratize space access for Indian companies and startups, making satellite launches affordable for everyone," ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Somanath said after the successful test.

ISRO plans to scale up the technology for a full-scale orbital vehicle by 2030. The agency is also exploring partnerships with private Indian space companies including Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos for collaborative development of reusable rocket stages.
