Apple Launches iPhone 17 Pro with Satellite-Based Emergency Messaging

Apple Launches iPhone 17 Pro with Satellite-Based Emergency Messaging

Apple on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max at its annual September event, introducing satellite-based two-way messaging as the headline feature. Unlike the emergency SOS feature in previous models, the new system allows users to send and receive regular text messages via satellite when no cellular or Wi-Fi connection is available.

Key Specifications

The iPhone 17 Pro features Apple's new A19 Pro chip, built on TSMC's 2nm process, delivering 30% better performance and 25% improved power efficiency. The camera system includes a new 48MP periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, up from 5x in the previous generation. ProMotion display technology has been upgraded to support a 240Hz refresh rate.

The satellite messaging feature works globally through a partnership with SpaceX's Starlink constellation. Users get 5GB of satellite data per month included with their iPhone purchase for the first two years. After that, a subscription of $9.99 per month will be required to continue using the service.

"We believe communication is a fundamental human right. With satellite messaging, your iPhone works everywhere on Earth — whether you're on a mountain peak, in the middle of the ocean, or in a remote village with no cell coverage," said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Pricing starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro and $1,399 for the Pro Max. Pre-orders begin this Friday, with availability in 60 countries starting September 29. India pricing has been set at Rs 1,44,900 for the base Pro model.
